How to remove a broken tap / drill bit the easy way
Просмотров 276 тыс.8 лет назад
I recently broke a tap in a newly made aluminum power steering bracket for my 1929 Ford Hot Rod. Several methods of removing the tap failed. Upon a bit of research I discovered that the tap, drill bit, or even a steel screw/bolt can be removed effortlessly by boiling the aluminum part in a water and alum solution without destroying the aluminum part. This was so simple and worked very well. Sub...

Improving Test Leads or Clip Leads by Soldering the Wire to the Alligator Clip
Просмотров 49 тыс.8 лет назад
As we are moving into the modern age, some things simply are not better only because the thought of making something cheaper rules. Jumper wires or clip leads now for the most part are made very cheaply. In most cases the wires are poorly crimped into the alligator clip resulting in a poor electrical connection. Using a jumper wire with a poor electrical connection will result in many head ache...

At 8:00, you show how to easily remove the tool by opening the 2 handles; unless you have a different style that I don't know about, that technique does not work. Instead, you must rotate the know counter-clockwise to remove the die and tool from the installed rivnut.

Well maintained tip will last years - the irony of this fact is because of that, I never saw my father tinning a newly bought tip. He got his solders when I was a little kid or even before that - and when he started teaching me how to solder some years later, all the tips he had were nicely tinned. He forgot to mention you have to tin a new tip, and I used one of our "shared" solders for ten something years. When I got me my own one, it was a total shitshow. The tip wasn't accepting tin, got blackened, and so on. Thinking it's a crappy Chinese tool, I scrounged myself some used kit manufactured somewhere in the 80s, and obviously, it came with tinned tips, so it worked - so I was totally convinced humanity has lost the art of making soldering irons and if you want to have one that works, it has to be as old as you. I learned about preparing the tip after more than 30 years of soldering. The irony. Felt like a total idiot.

I am having a very hard time with the lead free stuff that we now have to use at work. The component I need to work on can't be heated up too much so they have the iron set at 550 degrees and they want me to move quickly so the sensor will not be ruined by the heat. Also, the buss wire I solder to the sensor to make the legs longer (not sure why they don't just buy sensors with longer leads) will come un-soldered when I try to solder them to the board. With the older stuff it was much easier to say the least. Let's talk about lead in the land fills, I can't use a Tiny amount of lead solder, yet I can go to my outdoor shooting range and empty a mag of 45 acp at a target and then go hunting with 00 buck and spread 7 rounds of lead balls all over the woods for fun. I wouldn't use that much lead in a year or two doing PC Boards as I would in one afternoon at an outdoor range. If the government wants to ban guns all they would have to do is ban lead ammo.
